A familiar face has taken over the reins at New South Wales’ workers compensation scheme, with Geniere Aplin appointed the new chief executive at icare, returning after more than 10 years since she was a general manager at its predecessor, WorkCover.

John Robertson, Chair of icare, announced the appointment and said it follows in the wake of an “extensive search and rigorous recruitment process” to replace interim CEO Stuart Farquharson, after former chief executive Richard Harding departed the role in October 2024 after three years.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Aplin held the role of General Manger, Insurance at WorkCover NSW from August 2011 to November 2014.

“The Board is pleased to welcome Geniere to the team and was impressed by her wealth of experience leading large teams in complex ecosystems,” Robertson said.

“Her extensive knowledge of workers compensation in NSW, and broader insurance experience, will be an asset to icare as it continues to implement change that leads to better community outcomes.

“Our focus through the CEO recruitment process was to select a leader who could build on the solid progress delivered through icare’s recently completed reform program, with sound governance, transparency and accountability practices in place that will support ongoing delivery of the organisation’s strategy.

“Geniere’s mandate is to continue driving icare’s transformation to improve outcomes for injured workers and all scheme participants, while building long-term financial sustainability. Her demonstrated track record of success across her past roles means she is perfectly placed to lead the organisation to deliver on these outcomes.”

Aplin’s most recent role was Chief Executive Officer at EML Solutions, and brings board-level experience to her new position at icare.

“icare plays an important role in the NSW community – the strong community purpose is aligned to my personal values and was a key reason in my decision to join icare,” Aplin said.

“I am passionate about working with people to inspire, connect and empower teams to deliver improved business and community outcomes, and am looking forward to working with the Board and the icare team to achieve this.”
