South Australia teams with Washington-based Ignite Gig City Network to transform Adelaide into city of the future. This alliance unleashes the power of gigabit communications.

The South Australian government has teamed with the Washington-based Gig City Network to embrace high-speed, fast-access gigabit communications.

This alliance galvanises the City of Adelaide and the US Ignite initiative. The plan is to develop next-generation apps, while transforming Adelaide into gigabit communications hub.

The gig city model uses the power of pure fibre infrastructure to future-proof critical services. These include transport, energy or communications hubs.

An ultra-fast, pure fibre network is designed and built to support the current and future digital requirements of an entire city. These span schools and hospitals, businesses and homes.

Adelaide becomes Australia’s first gig city. This network will provide affordable one gigabit connections to Adelaide’s innovation hubs at Tonsley, Technology Park, Techport, the Thebarton BioScience precinct, St Paul’s Creative Centre, the Majoran Co-working Space, Hub Adelaide, and the Stretton Centre.

A gig city’s supporting network is built around the gigabit internet. This offers fibre-optic cable internet connection at speeds of up 1,000 megabits per second.

This connectivity downloads a high-definition movie in about 30 seconds, streams five HD movies simultaneously, or transfers data over the web faster than using a standard-issue thumb drive.

The US Ignite alliance was signed off by the South Australian Minister for Science and Information Economy, Minister Kyam Maher during a visit to Washington.

He said the MoU underscores collaboration and information-sharing between fifteen US Ignite communities and the Adelaide-based gig city alliance. This incorporates local businesses, as well as research and education organisations.

This MoU makes Adelaide the first city outside of the United States to become a partner in the US Ignite network.

This and other projects will be featured at the Inaugural FST Government South Australia conference being held Thursday 30th March 2017 (Adelaide Hilton). Visit us at https://fst.net.au/event/fst-government-south-australia-2017
