Alex Jones was appointed Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) in August 2015. DEDJTR is a large newly-formed Victorian state government department covering nine ministerial portfolios including transport, agriculture, economic development and the arts, and with oversight of 45 government agencies. Alex’s task is to define and deliver an ICT strategy reflecting the highly diverse nature of the department and its agencies.
Alex is a Council member of Curtin University and a member of Curtin’s Audit and Compliance Committee.
Alex moved back to Melbourne from Perth, where he was CIO of Synergy, Western Australia’s largest generator and retailer of electricity and gas. Alex steered the stabilisation of Synergy’s billing system and the launch of an ICT strategy that brought about a step change in the people and process excellence of the IT function, driving significant (external) customer satisfaction improvements and cost reductions. This work resulted in Alex winning the 2013 CIO of the Year award for Western Australia.
Prior to joining Synergy, Alex was an IT executive at Foster’s group. He held the roles of IT Director of the Carlton and United Breweries division, and Global Director of Business Information.
Alex worked for the Walt Disney Company for ten years, most recently as Global Director of Finance and Decision Support Systems for Disney Consumer Products, based in Los Angeles. He was also Disney’s regional IT Director for Disney Consumer Products Asia Pacific and Japan, based in Hong Kong for five years.
Alex has 20 years’ experience in Information Technology, mainly in commercial and business-facing roles within corporate IT departments. He has specialised knowledge in Business Intelligence, Customer Relationship Management, Business Process Management, and strategy and organisational design.
