Scott Totman is the Managing Vice President for Capital One’s Digital Products Engineering organisation, which builds every digital touchpoint for Capital One customers through web and mobile platforms.  He recently led the technology team at Capital One that developed and launched the Capital One skill for Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices.  The launch attracted widespread national media attention, as Capital One became the first company to provide customers with the ability to interact with their financial information through Alexa-enabled devices such as Amazon Echo, Amazon Tap, Echo Dot and Fire TV.

Scott joined Capital One in 2012 as the head of engineering for Capital One Labs, focused on bringing leading edge tools and processes into the company.  The Labs leveraged lean startup principles; build, measure, and learn as quickly as possible, delivering pilots to users on a frequent basis using design-thinking principles.  Pilots were built using the cloud, native UI constructs, and the programming language of choice, allowing teams to move much faster than traditional enterprise tools.  These same tools and principles are being carried over to the mobile organization, with the end goal of building the best in breed financial products for Capital One’s customers.

Prior to Capital One, Scott worked at AOL running AIM and ICQ, at the time the world’s largest messaging platforms.  He also spent time as AOL’s lead evangelist for accessibility, helping make its products functional for blind, deaf, and physically disabled users.  Scott left AOL to serve as CTO for the D.C. based startup Mobile Posse, focused on building CRM platforms for tier 1 carriers in the U.S.  Scott’s first job out of college involved building software and hardware capabilities for the CIA and NSA, which required a TS/SCI clearance level.

Scott holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science from William and Mary, as well as an M.S. in Software Systems Engineering and an MBA from George Mason University and Virginia Tech, respectively.

Outside of work, Scott enjoys teaching his 10-year-old son Vaughan to read, write, hit a curveball, and catch touchdowns.  He also enjoys tinkering with his first car, a 1968 Mustang, breaking and replacing virtually every part on it over the past 25 years.  Scott resides with his son in Vienna, VA.
