Medibank to embed US healthtech CX platform into digital services

League Platform

Medibank has confirmed a three-year strategic partnership with US health technology developer League to embed its technology within the health insurer’s customer service platforms.

League’s “data and AI-driven” healthcare navigation platform-as-a-service offering – touted as a “digital front door” to healthcare – will be implemented directly into Medibank’s digital services. This includes an initial rollout within the health insurer’s corporate digital health and wellbeing services before the end of this year.

Early next year, Medibank will extend the rollout to its wider retail membership, with League features to be integrated into the My Medibank app.

League’s composable and extensible platform promises “cohesive, data-driven and personalised healthcare experiences” for users, including options for personal health tracking, direct connections to clinical care and treatment, preventive health content, and wellness and rewards programs.

Medibank said the embedded solution would provide customers with “seamlessly integrated individualised next-best actions and content”.

The agreement with Medibank, Australia’s biggest health insurer, marks League’s first partnership outside of North America.

League boasts more than 20 million users worldwide, securing corporate partnerships with insurance giant Manulife, not-for-profit healthcare company Highmark Health, and Canadian retail pharmacy chain Shoppers Drug Mart.

League leverages Google Cloud’s Healthcare API, enabling it to tap relevant health data from individuals’ electronic health records, claims information and wearable devices, which promises for users an “all-in-one consumer healthcare platform”.

Last year, League said it would also leverage Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology to deliver further customer experience innovations, noting the potential for the development hyper-personalised next-best actions, enhanced conversational search, and automated content development for digital care plans.

League said it is also exploring the use of Google Cloud’s Med-PaLM 2 medically tuned large language model (LLM).

Medibank group lead digital and ventures Rob Deeming welcomed the integration of League as part of the health insurer’s ambition “to provide the best health and wellbeing experience in Australia”.

“We have a clear ambition to better connect health for 10 million Australians. This means better connecting health services and – for our existing customers – integrating those seamlessly with your health insurance membership,” Deeming said.

Deeming added: “League’s capability will provide the infrastructure to enable these experiences and deliver greater value for our customers and the community.

“The League platform is uniquely positioned to deliver on this vision, offering unparalleled personalisation and a proven track record of improved health outcomes. We’re excited to collaborate and make a real difference in the lives of Australians.”

League has attracted significant interest from investors since its founding in 2014, raising more than US$220 million (AU$330 million) in venture capital to date, including investments from Square, Twilio and Slack.
