CBA becomes first Aussie bank to extend account validation globally

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) will have its account validation service, NameCheck, embedded in global payments infrastructure, announcing it has become the first Australian bank to help validate bank account details used in international payments made to Australia.

CBA’s NameCheck service, which enables customers to verify the validity of names and account details of payments receivers and thus avoid the possibility of a mistaken payment, will be made available in limited form on J.P.Morgan’s peer-to-peer information sharing service Liink by J.P. Morgan.

CBA confirmed it will pilot the sharing of limited payee account data on the Liink network through NameCheck, helping to boost “security and efficiency for global banks processing payments to Australia”.

Liink is a network that facilitates secure and private peer-to-peer information and capability exchange between global financial services organisations, including banks, credit unions, fintechs, and digital banks.

Confirm, a payments verification application on the Liink network developed by J.P. Morgan’s blockchain business unit Onyx, enables the exchange of global account validation information.

CBA earlier this year made its NameCheck service available to external organisations via API.

CBA’s group executive business banking Mike Vacy-Lyle said the bank was “delighted” to enable NameCheck on the Liink platform to help tackle the global impact of scams and mistaken payments.

“We firmly believe a coordinated, whole-of-ecosystem approach is required across institutions operating in various sectors and jurisdictions.”

Umar Farooq, co-head global payments sales and chief executive at Onyx, said the firm was “excited to work with CBA to enable their NameCheck technology on a cross-border basis.

“This will be a pivotal effort in the continued path towards the better protection of our users and collective growth of the market.”

He added: “We developed Onyx and its Liink network to bring the ecosystem together to solve payment-related issues in a collaborative way by first breaking down data silos.”

CBA introduced NameCheck to its retail and business customers in 2023 and has been progressively rolling the feature out to further payment types and scenarios.
