NBN Co has appointed Vocus Group chief executive and Telstra senior executive, Ellie Sweeney, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

To commence in December, Sweeney takes over from former CEO Stephen Rue after he resigned from the position in May. The appointment comes at a time of significant growth for the critical national infrastructure provider, as it continues to invest in boosting Australia’s digital capabilities across metropolitan and regional areas.

“I am delighted to announce Ellie as nbn’s new CEO. She brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the telecommunications landscape, and will continue to deliver on our ambition to ensure that homes and businesses have access to world-class broadband – empowering people; delivering for customers, valued partners and stakeholders; and continuing to foster the strong culture of nbn,” Kate McKenzie, Chair of NBN Co, said.

“The Board considered Ellie’s experience, including a proven track record of strategic leadership, driving innovation, a passion for digital inclusion and a commitment to making a meaningful impact on communities, together with a deep alignment with nbn’s vision of connecting Australia and supporting the digital economy, to be especially well-suited to the challenge.

“NBN Co is committed to continuing its journey of growth and transformation, and our ambition of becoming a brilliant wholesaler, enabling Australia’s digital future.”

Sweeney joins from Vocus Group, where she spent close to six years and was most recently CEO.

“What drew me to nbn is the company’s commitment to transforming lives through connectivity and I am excited to lead an organisation that is dedicated to ensuring that every Australian, no matter where they live, has access to fast, high-quality, reliable internet,” Sweeney said.

“nbn doesn’t just build the infrastructure; the company is building the future of Australia. My passion for the nbn purpose stems from a belief that enhanced connectivity drives progress and prosperity. I look forward to leading the company’s ongoing efforts to create a more connected and digitally capable Australia.

“My vision for our future is rooted in the conviction that by expanding and enhancing our digital infrastructure and technology, we can drive meaningful change and ensure that all Australians can thrive.”

Philip Knox, NBN Co Chief Financial Officer, was appointed Interim CEO as the NBN Co Board undertook its search.
“Ms Sweeney’s appointment comes at an important time for NBN Co, to maximise the benefits of the National Broadband Network for all Australians,” Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, said.

“The Albanese Government is investing to support NBN Co to deliver network upgrades and improved technology to meet the growing connectivity needs of Australians.

“Our goal is to narrow the digital divide across Australian communities, and ensure we have world-class digital infrastructure to support a Future Made in Australia.”

“Ms Sweeney has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and has decades of experience leading transformation in the telecommunications industry,” Minister for Finance, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, said.

“Ms Sweeney’s leadership will help NBN Co continue its work delivering fast, reliable and affordable connectivity to families, communities and businesses, building a more connected and prosperous Australia.”
