Starting with a private sector ITO company, I moved into the public sector more than 15 years ago. Working primarily with infrastructure and transition projects (DTF, SSSA, DPC) I moved to the Department for Water as their Chief Technology Officer. After DfW merged with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – “Machinery of Government” – we were left with a sprawling Wide Area Network (WAN) and a heavy legacy footprint. Several years later, we now enjoy a standardised and optimised service provision, empowering our scientists, rangers, compliance officers and field workers with fit-for-purpose digital tools and the means to connect to them. I firmly believe that now digital transformation is not limited by the availability technology itself – it is cultural transformation that is now the primary challenge.
