Jonathan Byun identifies himself as a first principles thinker, believer in the AI future, and an entrepreneur at heart. As the Head of AI and Machine Learning at Australian Unity, he is responsible for shaping and executing the enterprise AI strategy and overseeing all aspects of AI initiatives.
Jonathan’s enduring fascination with the concept and potential of thinking machines has shaped his career. He holds degrees in Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering, and a Master of Business Analytics, earning accolades such as the Vice-Chancellor’s Award, IBM Prize, and Dean’s Merit List. His experience spans systems engineering, robotics, software engineering, data science, and machine learning in both technical and leadership capacities. He has co-founded three tech start-ups (two with AI-focus), won multiple hackathons, and pioneered the Data Science function at Liberty Financial.
In his previous role, Jonathan’s no-nonsense and outcomes-driven approach led to the development of productivity and optimisation tools at Australian Unity’s Home Health platform, which is on-track to reach recurring $14 million per annum in cost savings and revenue capture. In his current role, he aims to drive similar outcomes on a larger scale, by leveraging AI to boost productivity and positively impact Australian Unity’s members and the broader community.
